400 Conejos Tobala Mezcal｜ Other Products

Tobalá is the mezcal world's prized wild agave — a small, slow-growing Agave potatorum that hides in the shade of oaks on rocky highland slopes and takes over a decade to mature — and 400 Conejos' Tobalá blends it with espadín to bring a taste of it to an everyday price. Named for the Centzon Totochtin, the Four Hundred Rabbit gods of Aztec drunkenness, the brand is Mexico's best-selling mezcal, made in Santiago Matatlán, the mezcal capital of Oaxaca, with agaves cooked in a traditional conical earthen oven over wood, fermented, and distilled in small batches, bottled at 40% ABV. Expect roasted agave and light smoke on the nose with a floral, slightly fruity lift the tobalá lends, opening into a sweet, smooth palate — Mezcal Reviews' tasters found a bubble-gum sweetness, florals that keep you sipping, and remarkable smoothness — with gentle smoke and a clean finish. Honest reception: this is an espadín-tobalá blend, not a 100% tobalá, and enthusiasts note the tobalá share is modest — one called it weak next to a true single-agave tobalá, another called it hard to beat for sippability at the price. Both are right. For a first taste of what tobalá brings, a sweeter neat pour, or a Mezcal Margarita with a floral edge, it's the most approachable rabbit in the warren.
